Detoxification is targeted toward the liver and abdominal area, where metal toxicity is believed to play a role in fat accumulation [Cave et al 2010; Padilla et al 2010]. Mailloux et al [2007 and 2011] describe aluminum, in particular, as disrupting the proper function of mitochondria in the liver, leading to fatty liver disease and other hepatic disorders. Mitochondrion are the body’s tiny battery cells, producing ATP and energy. By causing mitochondrial dysfunction, aluminum toxicity could be reducing a critical energy source for organ systems throughout the body [Auger et al 2015; Han et al 2013; Mailloux et al 2007]. Countries such as Japan and Korea, where seaweeds are common ingredients in the traditional diet, have a much lower incidence of metabolic syndrome. The unique properties of kelp may help to alleviate obesity-related conditions [Kim and Bhatnagar 2011; Kumar and Brown 2013]. In addition, due to Laminaria’s antimicrobial and antioxidant properties [Gupta et al 2011], it also serves as a natural preservative in the AdiTOX cream.
